President Donald Trump said Saturday he is ordering the Justice Department to investigate Democratic leaders for what he called "criminal extortion," days after Democrats won control of Congress.

In a Truth Social post, Trump accused Democrats of "threatening a lot of people, including the Attorney General of the United States, and others, with Impeachment," and of threatening Republican donors with prison. "By copy of this statement, I am ordering the Department of Justice to look into this criminal act, immediately!" he wrote, according to [NBC News](https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2026-election/live-blog/rump-taps-stephen-miller-chief-staff-wiles-cabinet-midterm-elections-rcna607914?ref=workersrights.news).

The only Democrat he named was Sen. Elissa Slotkin of Michigan, who he claimed plans to "go after all young people that believe in Republican Values." Trump also claimed "threatening letters" had gone out from Democratic leaders. He did not say who sent them, who got them, or what they said, and he offered no evidence of a crime, [CNBC reported](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/11/07/trump-doj-democrats-alleged-threats-slotkin.html?ref=workersrights.news). The Justice Department had not announced any investigation as of Saturday afternoon.

Impeachment is a power the Constitution gives the House. Calling a vote on it a crime is Trump's claim, and no evidence offered so far supports it.

### What Slotkin actually said

CNBC reported that Trump appeared to be reacting to an Oct. 13 speech at the University of Chicago, where Slotkin said she wants young graduates to weigh whether working for the Trump administration could bring them problems later. She said she wants "that deterrence message sent."

Slotkin answered on X that people who break the law or use taxpayer money to enrich themselves should be held accountable. "If you didn't break the law, then it's all good," she wrote, [NBC News reported](https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2026-election/live-blog/rump-taps-stephen-miller-chief-staff-wiles-cabinet-midterm-elections-rcna607914?ref=workersrights.news).

### Second time she's been a target

This isn't the first time Trump has pointed prosecutors at Slotkin. After she and five other Democratic veterans posted a video urging troops to refuse illegal orders, Trump called the offense "punishable by death" and the FBI sought interviews. In February, a Washington grand jury refused to indict them, the [Associated Press reported](https://www.pbs.org/newshour/amp/politics/watch-live-slotkin-kelly-speak-after-grand-jury-refuses-to-charge-them-over-illegal-orders-video?ref=workersrights.news).

Saturday's order lands as Democrats prepare to take over House and Senate committees in January with promises of oversight, and days after Trump's DOJ sent [criminal target letters to Democrats on Election Day](https://www.workersrights.news/trump-doj-target-letters-marc-elias-alaska-senate-probe-election-day/). His prosecutor for a separate probe of his critics [resigned this week](https://www.workersrights.news/jason-reding-quinones-resigns-grand-conspiracy-probe-trump-critics/) without charging anyone.

What to watch: whether the Justice Department opens a case, and whom it names.
