A chemical tank at a north Toledo terminal began releasing glycidyl methacrylate late Tuesday, Oct. 20, forcing about 1,000 people from their homes and sending dozens to the hospital. By Thursday morning the release had slowed, but a quarter-mile evacuation zone was still in place around the site at 1266 Progress Ave.

The tank sits at a terminal run by MC Tank Transport Inc., an Arkansas-based subsidiary of The Kenan Advantage Group. Ohio EPA spokesperson Bryant Somerville said the leak came from "an error that occurred when the material was being transferred," [CNN reported](https://abc17news.com/news/national-world/cnn-national/2026/10/21/error-caused-toledo-chemical-leak-epa-says-triggering-evacuations-and-fear-of-explosion/?ref=workersrights.news).

### Evacuations and the plume

Toledo Fire and Rescue ordered everyone within one mile to leave at 10:48 p.m. Tuesday and told people within three miles to shelter in place at 4:24 a.m. Wednesday, [ABC News reported](https://abcnews.com/US/chemical-tank-explosion-prompts-evacuation-shelter-place-orders/story?id=137454904&ref=workersrights.news). Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz said more than 900 people live in the evacuation zone, [Newsweek reported](https://www.newsweek.com/ohio-toledo-chemical-leak-evacuation-glycidyl-methacrylate-map-12599973?ref=workersrights.news).

Efforts to contain the leak failed, so officials decided to let the chemical finish reacting rather than send crews toward the 5,500-gallon tank. "There is still concern that the tank is emitting this chemical and it has the potential within 12 hours of the incident to be explosive," Kapszukiewicz said Wednesday, [WXYZ reported](https://www.wxyz.com/news/hazmat-incident-forces-evacuation-for-one-mile-radius-of-northern-toledo-area?ref=workersrights.news). The mayor described an explosion; the city's emergency page said no explosion occurred and called it a hazardous-material release, [Newsweek reported](https://www.newsweek.com/ohio-toledo-chemical-leak-evacuation-glycidyl-methacrylate-map-12599973?ref=workersrights.news).

By Thursday, the shelter-in-place order was lifted and the Lucas County Emergency Management Agency had cut the evacuation zone to a quarter mile, [13 ABC reported](https://www.13abc.com/2026/10/21/live-blog-toledo-chemical-release-prompts-evacuations-shelter-place-orders/?ref=workersrights.news).

### Who got hurt

ProMedica said it had treated about 30 people for symptoms "potentially related to the chemical leak" by Wednesday afternoon, most of them treated and released. By Thursday, Toledo officials put the count at 57 patients, with seven still being treated and none in serious condition, [People reported](https://www.yahoo.com/news/weather-news/articles/nearly-60-people-treated-hazardous-164234866.html?ref=workersrights.news). Kapszukiewicz said a sheriff's deputy was hurt responding and drove himself to the hospital, [WXYZ reported](https://www.wxyz.com/news/hazmat-incident-forces-evacuation-for-one-mile-radius-of-northern-toledo-area?ref=workersrights.news).

Workers felt it too. The Jeep plant, Kuka, Mobis, Mayco and Dana canceled afternoon shifts Wednesday, [13 ABC reported](https://www.13abc.com/2026/10/21/live-blog-toledo-chemical-release-prompts-evacuations-shelter-place-orders/?ref=workersrights.news). Ships stayed in port, CSX trains on nearby lines were stopped, and crews were "picking up odors at the docks," said Michael Posadny, special operations deputy chief at Toledo Fire and Rescue, [CNN reported](https://abc17news.com/news/national-world/cnn-national/2026/10/21/error-caused-toledo-chemical-leak-epa-says-triggering-evacuations-and-fear-of-explosion/?ref=workersrights.news).

### Health risks

City officials describe the chemical as an irritant that can burn the eyes, nose, mouth and skin. Overexposure can cause headaches, dizziness, fatigue, nausea and vomiting. Anyone with trouble breathing, vomiting or confusion should call 911\. "It's really toxic if you touch it, if you ingest it," said Karim Baroudi, director of the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department, told WXYZ. The department runs a symptom hotline at 419-779-7089.

The World Health Organization's cancer agency classifies glycidyl methacrylate as "probably carcinogenic to humans," [based on its 2019 review](https://www.iarc.who.int/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/QA%5FMonographs%5FVolume-125.pdf?ref=workersrights.news), which looked at long-term exposure, not a single release. Kapszukiewicz said air testing so far "hasn't revealed anything that would be harmful to human health." Ohio State University Extension advised throwing out garden produce grown within the three-mile zone, [People reported](https://www.yahoo.com/news/weather-news/articles/nearly-60-people-treated-hazardous-164234866.html?ref=workersrights.news).

### Who's responsible

MC Tank Transport confirmed that "equipment associated with our operations is involved" and said it is working with the American Red Cross on lodging and transportation for displaced residents, [according to its statement](https://www.thekag.com/wp-content/uploads/Press-Release-MC-Tank-Toledo.pdf?ref=workersrights.news). It has not said what caused the leak. WorkersRights.News found no public statement from the company accepting or denying responsibility.

### Who's responding

The Ohio EPA's Office of Emergency Response is on scene, and the U.S. EPA is monitoring the air. Gov. Mike DeWine's office said the Ohio Emergency Management Agency and the Ohio Department of Public Safety are in close contact with local officials, [CNN reported](https://abc17news.com/news/national-world/cnn-national/2026/10/21/error-caused-toledo-chemical-leak-epa-says-triggering-evacuations-and-fear-of-explosion/?ref=workersrights.news). No FEMA involvement has been reported.
