Republicans redrew congressional maps in several states to win more House seats in this week's midterms. With the votes counted so far, the plan mostly failed. ABC News reported Thursday that Republicans redrew 15 seats to try to flip them and are projected to lose more than two-thirds of them.

According to [ABC News](https://abcnews.com/Politics/won-redistricting-war-democrats/story?id=137858678&ref=workersrights.news), Democrats held 11 of the 15 Republican-redrawn seats, Republicans flipped two (Tennessee's 9th District and Texas's 32nd), and two (Florida's 9th and Louisiana's 6th) had not been projected as of Thursday. Counts differ by outlet and several races remain uncalled, so these totals can still move.

## Where the maps backfired

[CBS News](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/dummymander-republican-redistricting-congress-trump/?ref=workersrights.news) used the term "dummymander," which it defined as "a situation in which a party tries to gerrymander, but ends up benefiting the other party." It applied the label to several states:

- **Ohio:** The map aimed to net Republicans two seats. CBS reported that eight Democrats won, including Marcy Kaptur and Greg Landsman, and Republicans won seven.
- **North Carolina:** The map targeted Democratic Rep. Don Davis. CBS reported that nine Democrats won, including Davis.
- **Alabama:** The map targeted two Black-majority districts held by Democrats. Both incumbents won, CBS reported, so Republicans gained no seats beyond the five they already held.
- **Texas:** Republicans held 24 seats and Democrats 13 going in. CBS reported they ended with 24 and 14.

Republican plans also fell apart before the election. CBS reported that Indiana's Republican-led state Senate rejected a new map, South Carolina's redraw failed in its state Senate, and a court blocked Missouri's new map, so the 2022 districts were used.

## Where Republicans did gain

Tennessee's redrawn 9th District, which the map aimed at the Democratic-held Memphis seat, went to Republican Brent Taylor, ABC News reported. In Texas, Republican Jace Yarbrough won the 32nd District. Those are the two flips ABC counts.

## The Democratic side

Democrats also redrew. ABC News reported that California's Proposition 50, which redrew five seats toward Democrats, "appears to be paying off," with Democrats flipping California's 1st, 3rd, 6th, 41st and 48th Districts. In Utah, a court-selected map created a Democratic-leaning Salt Lake City district, and CBS reported Democrat Ben McAdams won it by 47 points.

Not every Democratic plan survived. CBS reported that Virginia voters approved a Democratic-favoring map, but the state Supreme Court threw it out and restored the 2021 map. Maryland voters passed Question 3, which removes redistricting constraints, and CBS reported Democrats are likely to redraw that state's map to target its only Republican House member.

## What to watch

Final seat totals depend on races that are still uncalled, including Louisiana's 6th and 5th Districts (the 5th goes to a runoff), four Florida toss-ups and five Republican-held North Carolina districts that CBS rated as toss-ups. How those finish will decide how many maps count as backfires. Maryland's expected redraw is next.
