Texas voters fired Gov. Greg Abbott on Tuesday. Democratic state Rep. Gina Hinojosa, a former civil rights and labor lawyer, defeated the three-term Republican, [NBC News](https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2026-election/gina-hinojosa-win-texas-governor-race-greg-abbott-upset-election-rcna603360?ref=workersrights.news) and [CBS News](https://www.cbsnews.com/texas/news/texas-governor-election-2026-greg-abbott-gina-hinojosa-results/?ref=workersrights.news) projected.

Hinojosa will be the first Democrat to lead Texas since Ann Richards left office in 1995, and the state's first Hispanic governor. She is the third woman to hold the job. Abbott, in office since January 2015, was seeking a record fourth term.

Abbott conceded around 10 p.m. Central. "There are still votes to be counted, but mathematically, we're not going to be able to win this election," he told supporters, according to [CBS Texas](https://www.cbsnews.com/texas/live-updates/texas-midterm-elections-2026?ref=workersrights.news). He said he would help her team "in a period of transition."

### Who she is

Hinojosa grew up in the Rio Grande Valley and won her Austin House seat in 2016, NBC reported. She served on the Austin school board, and she has said a fight to keep her son's elementary school from closing over state budget cuts pushed her to run.

She campaigned on the cost of living. She attacked Abbott's billionaire donors and the school voucher program he helped push through in 2025, [HuffPost reported](https://www.huffpost.com/entry/gina-hinojosa-defeats-greg-abbott-texas-governor%5Fn%5F6ae28682e4b0a2cccd4636b8?ref=workersrights.news). She called for higher teacher pay, more money for public schools, lower health care costs and protections for residents from data centers.

### Trump blames Abbott

President Trump claimed Abbott lost because he had become a "RINO," a Republican in name only, according to [NBC News](https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2026-election/live-blog/midterm-election-results-2026-news-trump-live-updates-rcna605763?ref=workersrights.news) and CBS Texas. Neither outlet reported any evidence for the claim.

Texas also elected Democrat James Talarico to the U.S. Senate over Ken Paxton, part of the night that handed Democrats [full control of Congress](https://www.workersrights.news/democrats-win-senate-full-control-congress-garcia-lawyer-up/).

### What's next

Hinojosa takes office in January 2027\. Votes are still being counted, and the state certifies results in the coming weeks.
