Armed federal agents have been knocking on doors in at least six states, asking residents about their immigration status and whether they registered or voted in past elections, CBS News reported Wednesday, Oct. 21\. Election Day is Nov. 3.

The agents work for Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), a branch of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. According to internal documents reviewed by CBS, a "Criminal Voter Fraud" initiative calls for "field reviews" in California, Georgia, Missouri, Pennsylvania, Washington, and Wisconsin, and hundreds of agents were pulled off their regular cases for the surge. CNN first reported the plan in August. CBS says the home visits ramped up in September and continued through this past weekend.

HSI has advertised the visits itself. CBS describes photos and video posted by HSI's Northern California account showing agents, some carrying firearms, approaching homes, with the caption "AMERICAN ELECTIONS ARE FOR AMERICANS." One video shows a document labeled "Target List." An HSI agent told CBS the lists are built by matching voter rolls and other databases against federal citizenship records.

### What the record shows

The administration claims up to 250,000 noncitizens may be registered to vote. Election experts dispute that number, and the government's own figures have collapsed before: DHS said nearly 16,000 noncitizens were on Nevada's rolls, then narrowed that to 185, and Nevada officials found all 185 were citizens, according to a [federal lawsuit we covered](https://www.workersrights.news/dhs-voter-data-47-states-lawsuit/). The Justice Department says 156 people have been charged with voting-related crimes since Trump took office, out of about 227 million registered voters. That includes the [28 California green card holders](https://www.workersrights.news/doj-charges-28-california-green-card-holders-voting-20000-ballots/) charged this week.

A DHS spokesperson told CBS that "those who are here legally and are not breaking other laws have nothing to fear."

Jessica Marsden, a lawyer with Protect Democracy, which is suing over the campaign, said it "seems maximally designed to scare lawful voters from participating." Eric Balliet, a former HSI agent, told CBS he never knew of the agency sending agents to private homes to check voter eligibility in his 23 years there.

### Who this hits

Naturalized citizens, and the families they live with, are the people most likely to land on a target list built from mismatched records. CBS did not report how many homes agents have visited.

If you're a citizen, you have the right to vote. [Check your registration](https://www.workersrights.news/check-voter-registration-before-nov-3/) with your state election office before Nov. 3.
